was a drop-dead gorgeous Maryland dairy farmer whose beauty exceeded anything in the Vogue pages she carelessly flipped through. That I was her roommate no doubt perplexed her many admirers. She left me with a hopeless devotion to AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Crack the Sky.

I absolutely the juxtaposition of dairy farmer and fashion magazine!
But who, or what, is Crack the Sky? Yet another cultural icon that passed me by?
More of a regional cultural icon. Definitely big in Maryland in certain circles. You can't believe how much people can get for their out-of-print CDs (and of course, they recorded on vinyl...).
Hmmm. I see I dropped a word. My post should say, "I absolutely adore the juxtaposition. . . ."
Once in a while I should mention how much I enjoy your blog.
I've never seen an indigo bunting. I have seen snow buntings, and get both cedar and bohemian waxwings. Every summer a kingfisher hangs out at the creek in my backyard. He came back a few days ago - it must be spring.
(Sorry, I missed the bird thread down below)
mm: I can't be sure I've ever seen a bohemian waxwing. Last year a couple of indigo buntings actually came to my feeder for a couple of days—a real surprise, given that I'm in a village. I'm lucky to get a yearly siting, really. And I saw a kingfisher this week! You're right—it's spring! Thank you for the compliment, and every once in a while I need to mention how much I MISS your blog.
The bohemians are recognized by their distinctive mating call:
"heybaybee...heybaybee..." They're also often surrounded by a sweetish smelling cloud of smoke.
Thanks for your comment about my blog. I sometimes run into someone, or think of an old friend, and wish I still had it. Luckily, the feeling goes away.
mm: Thanks for the heads up on the bohemian waxwing. I'm wondering if I've ever run into them indoors.
If you're not posting, I'm certainly glad you're reading and commenting. I would miss this sense of humor far too much.
