68/365 Russ

Roadkill Russ didn’t let anything go to waste. Those barbecued venison ribs were beyond tender. He used to have a job he couldn’t talk about. An expert spelunker, he was with the first search-and-rescue teams at Ground Zero. Maybe you saw him on TV.

I loved hearing Russ's "rules of the road": when traveling in a rural area, ignore any roadkill on your outward-bound trip--you don't know how long it's been there; but you can safely pick up any new roadkill on your trip home, since you have an accurate window for judging the freshness of the meat!

See? This guy makes an impression! I had forgotten that tidbit from that long-ago party, and I've known him for years!

Roadkill Russ didn't actively hunt down pre-roadkill, did he?

Nope. He definitely didn't have a death wish for them!

so many layers after the word spelunker ... the (horror? benefit? opportunity?) that something intended to be exploratory was put into use for an entirely different sort of exploration, in such a different context.

(still shaking my head at the juxtaposition of something that conjures up images of exploration and adventure being put to use in such a necessary and beneficial way, in the context of something so horrific).

this would be one of those times you wrote an entire book in 44 words

Thanks, BB. It is amazing to think about using those skills in that aftermath. The work really messed up his lungs, as you might imagine.
