259/365 Another Mark

His speech is peppered with silences that are easier to negotiate face-to-face than on the phone. Is he still there? Has the line gone dead? Has he? He is carefully formulating his reply, answering questions about a proofing job, then his wife, his daughters.

"peppered with silences" - I love that line!

I guess this kind of careful thinking is what one wants in a proofreader. (By the way, I really laughed at the "Has he?" bit.)

I have several friends who are quite chatty in groups of two or three, but who get quieter and quieter the larger the gathering. Once a critical mass is reached--say, ten or eleven--they are attentive but utterly silent. If Mark is like this one-on-one, does he go catatonic in small gatherings?

It's been a long time since I've spent time with him. My memory is he does not go catatonic. He's just a slow talker. Thoughtful.
